Turkey expands electricity generation capacity to 105,659 MW in century of Turkish Republic

(MENAFN) Turkey has significantly expanded its electricity generation capacity, increasing it from 33 megawatts (MW) in 1923 to a substantial 105,659 MW by October 2023. This remarkable growth has been made possible through a century of energy investments, and these developments in the electricity sector have been compiled by the staff of a Turkish news agency as the nation prepares to celebrate the centennial anniversary of Republic Day.

Over the course of a century, the total installed electricity capacity in Turkey has witnessed significant milestones, progressing from 33 MW in 1923 to 78 MW in 1930, 217 MW in 1940, 407 MW in 1950, 1,271 MW in 1960, and 2,234 MW in 1970.

In terms of renewable energy sources, Turkey achieved notable milestones, with the establishment of its first geothermal power plant in Denizli in 1974, the inception of the first wind power plant in Izmir in 1998, and the installation of the first solar power plant in Istanbul in 2011.

Turkey's journey in harnessing hydroelectric power began with the commissioning of the Tarsus Hydroelectric Power Plant in 1902 in the Mersin Province, featuring a capacity of 60 kilowatts. Subsequently, the Isiklar Hydroelectric Power Plant was established in 1929 in Trabzon, situated along the Black Sea coast in northeastern Turkey.

The country's foray into thermal power generation included the construction of its first coal-fired thermal power plant in Istanbul in 1914. Further contributing to this sector was the Catalagzi Thermal Power Plant, which commenced operations in 1948 in Zonguldak, a city located in the Black Sea region. The Hamitabat Natural Gas Combined Cycle Power Plant, established in 1985 in Luleburgaz, Kirklareli, a city in the European part of Turkey, marked the introduction of natural gas combined cycle power plants.
