(MENAFN) A time capsule dating back to the 1820s that was unlocked in a very-awaited formality at the West Point United States army academy appeared to hold coins as well as a medal.

The lead container was examined in front of a room-full of cadets on Monday. The spectators were discouraged when the container was unlocked and it looked vacant.

However, presently, representatives state the container in fact contained a medal as well as five coins, made in years extending from 1795 to 1828.

In a declaration, the academy stated they "were embedded" in the container`s "matrix".

The coins were made with standards extending from one cent up to one buck.

The container also held a medal that rejoices the conclusion of the Erie Canal in 1825. The canal was established in eight years also linked the Hudson River in New York to the Great Lakes.
