(MENAFN- Kashmir Observer) Srinagar- The delicate tile Base of aesthetic fountains at Lal Chowk, which was renovated as part of the Srinagar Smart City Project has developed cracks and tiles come loose after a group of about 70 people, probably non-locals danced on it on the 76th Independence Day on Tuesday.
The unbecoming act comes day after Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha inaugurated the iconic clock tower amidst much fanfare at city center Lal Chowk.
It is in place to mention that hordes of people swarmed the historic Lal Chowk in Srinagar, the summer capital, since early in the morning to commemorate India's 76th Independence Day.

An official at the Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) told Kashmir Observer that the base of the aesthetic fountain, comprising delicate tiles has developed cracks and tiles come loose after a group of people, probably non-locals, began dancing on it.
He said the Commissioner SMC, Athar Amir Khan who also heads Srinagar Smart City Project as Chief Executive along with a team of officials rushed to the spot to assess the loss. He said the civic body will check CCTV cameras installed around the venue to identify those responsible for the unbecoming act.

He said the dry deck fountains are aimed at adding beauty to the place where they are fitted and that dancing on it is not done.
“Yes the tiles have developed cracks and at the same time come loose, we urge people not to damage the government property. It was due to the tireless efforts of the administration that the Lal Chowk project was completed on time. Please do away with irresponsible acts,” Khan urged the masses, adding those found damaging the government property 'intentionally' will be dealt with strictly.
He said a barrier will be erected around the fountain area so that such acts are not repeated in the future.
