Elephants kill 2 citizens after escaping in Uganda

(MENAFN) Two citizens were deceased by an elephant herd that broke free from a Ugandan park before damaging crops.

The event, claimed the authorities, happened at Queen Elizabeth National Park, which is situated 278 kilometers (172 miles) from Kampala, the capital, in the western region of Kasese.

"The elephants moved from the park to a neighboring village called Kasandala, where they caused havoc. The government will evaluate the damage done and compensate those affected,” Kasese Resident District Commissioner Joe Walusimbi informed Anadolu.

Bashir Hangi, the representative for the Uganda Wildlife Authority, indicated that the elephants had killed citizens and destroyed farms. He expressed his sympathies to families who lost loved ones and assured them that the administration will assist them.

According to the leader of Kasandala village, Augustus Muzimbi, Yoramu Mugisha and Deo Mujuke were both slaughtered; Yoramu was confronted by elephants while working in his yard, and Deo was assaulted as he was returning from fishing in a lake nearby.
