Chennai, Aug 10 (KNN) The Central Pollution Control Board has sought feedback from the coir sector regarding the classification of the industry under the orange category, the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board said.

The Industry is currently under“white” category. The CPCB released a draft notification in July regarding classification of industrial sectors into red, orange, green and white categories, with manufacturing of coir (wet/dyeing) classified as orange, manufacturing of coir (dry process) under green and manufacturing of coir items is classified under white category. This is yet to be notified.

TN minister for environment and climate change Siva V Meyyanathan convened a meeting recently, clarifying that all coir units are currently under“white” category.

“Coir associations have been asked to submit comments/suggestions on the draft notification before August 31,” he said in a press statement.

As per reports, the TNPCB had constituted a committee that worked out the pollution index score for the coir industries.

At present, there are hundreds of coir industries in places such as Pollachi, Tirupur, Karur, Namakkal, Erode, Theni, Dindigul and Kanyakumari and in Pollachi, district of Tamil Nadu.
