Eu Deplores Russian Veto Over Humanitarian Assistance To Syrians

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, July 12 (KUNA) -- The European Union deplored the veto by Russia yesterday on the UN Security Council Resolution 2672 (2023) to extend for additional six months the authorization of cross-border delivery of humanitarian assistance to people in northwest Syria.
"The non-renewal of UNSCR 2672 as a result of the Russian veto will further exacerbate the already dire humanitarian situation in northwest Syria and will gravely disrupt the delivery of life-saving humanitarian supplies to millions in need," said EU High Representative Josep Borrell and EU Commissioner for Crisis Management Janez Lenarcic in a joint statement on Wednesday.
The EU "is deeply concerned about the impact of this decision and the further politicisation of humanitarian assistance to people in desperate need," said the statement and called on the UNSC to undertake every effort to find a solution that will enable cross-border assistance to continue.
As there is no adequate alternative to the UN-coordinated mechanism, the halting of cross-border delivery will lead to the loss of the only lifeline for more than 4 million people living in Northwest Syria, including almost 3 million internally displaced persons, noted the EU statement.
The authorization for use of the Bab al-Hawa border crossing for the delivery of aid into north-west Syria, originally stipulated in the UNSC Resolution 2165 (2014), was last renewed on January 9, 2023, and expired on July 10, 2023. (end)
