Lativa clamps down on tourism form Russia due to war on Ukraine

(MENAFN) The leader of the Association of Hotels and Restaurants of Latvia, Andris Kalnins, stated on Friday that Latvia has suffered the loss of a third of its tourists since reducing affairs with Russia over the Ukraine battle and is improbable to ever recuperate the loss.

The Baltic country had been a common destination for Russian tourists for a long time, and that is because of its close proximity to Russia, as well as historical relations as a previous portion of the Soviet Union.

In September last year Latvia limited tourism from Russia, with Foreign Minister Edgar Rinkevics posting in a tweet: “You're not welcome here – you need to end the war against Ukraine and be gone from that beautiful country!”

The restriction – which includes most Russian tourists, except for European Union residence who have a permit as well as some other groups – has caused a great blow to Latvia’s tourism sector. Russians formerly accounted for a third of all visitors to the nation.
