Rain Related Incidents Kill 25, Injures 145 People In N. Pakistan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISLAMABAD, June 10 (KUNA) -- At least 25 people were killed and over 145 others received injuries in rain-related incidents in Pakistan's northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KPK) province on Saturday.
According to a report issued by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) of KPK, at least 25 people died and 145 were injured in rain-related incidents as torrential showers battered KPK's Karak, Bannu, Dera Ismail Khan and Lakki Marwat districts.
It confirmed 15 deaths from Bannu, five from Lakki Marwat, four from Karak and one from DI Khan district.
It added that 69 houses were partially damaged due to heavy rain in the affected areas.
The Rescue 1122 Director General, Dr. Khateer Ahmad in a statement to media confirmed that rescue operations were under way in the affected districts.
A statement issued by the KPK Relief, Rehabilitation and Settlement said that the department had issued directives to expedite the rescue work.
"The affected people will be provided relief in line with government policies," the statement read.
Hospitals in the affected areas had been put on high alert while the provincial disaster management authority (PDMA) was conducting rescue operations.
The electric supply has been reportedly disrupted, plunging many areas into darkness.
Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif expressed grief over the loss of lives in the rain-related incidents and extended condolences to bereaved families.
PM Sharif has directed the National Disaster Management Authority to ensure steps were taken for relief and rehabilitation in the affected areas and to work in cooperation with the PDMA and Rescue 1122. (end)
