Tesco Chairman John Allan to Step Down Amid Allegations, Search for Replacement Underway
(MENAFN) Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket chain, announced on Friday that its chairman, John Allan, would be stepping down from his position next month. The decision comes in the wake of newspaper allegations regarding Allan's conduct towards women. Interim Chair Byron Grote stated in a London Stock Exchange announcement that the company is in the advanced stages of searching for a new chair and will provide an update in due course. Grote himself will preside over Tesco's upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) on June 16, during which Allan will officially step down after serving eight years in the chairmanship.
The Guardian newspaper recently reported allegations against Allan, stating that he faced claims of inappropriate and unprofessional behavior from four women. According to the newspaper, the 74-year-old chairman allegedly touched the bottom of a senior Tesco staff member during last year's AGM. In response, Tesco issued a statement acknowledging that John Allan denies three of the allegations vigorously, while he unreservedly apologized for the comment made in the fourth allegation. The retail giant initiated an extensive review of the claims with the support of external lawyers. The review, however, found no evidence or complaints against Allan related to the Tesco 2022 AGM or his tenure as chair.
Despite the lack of substantiated evidence, Byron Grote expressed concern that the allegations could become a distraction to Tesco. He thanked John Allan for his significant contributions to the business but noted the need to address the potential impact of the allegations. The Guardian's report follows similar revelations of misconduct accusations against employees at the Confederation of British Industry (CBI), the UK's primary business lobby group, which resulted in significant organizational changes and a police investigation.
As Tesco prepares for a leadership transition, the company aims to ensure continuity and stability while addressing the allegations raised against its chairman. The search for a new chair is underway, with the goal of finding a suitable candidate to guide the supermarket giant forward. The outcome of the allegations remains subject to ongoing scrutiny, highlighting the importance of maintaining a safe and respectful work environment within corporate leadership positions.
