Libyan Armed Forces Leaders Ready to Secure Upcoming Elections

(MENAFN) The leaders of the Libyan armed forces in the east and west of the country have announced their readiness to secure the upcoming elections. The announcement was made during a meeting between Libyan Chief of General Staff Lt. Gen. Mohammed Al-Haddad and Abdel Razek al-Nadori, Kahlifa Haftar's army chief, in the city of Benghazi. Al-Nadori stated that the Libyan army is independent and does not belong to any political party, and that they are ready to secure the upcoming elections.

Al-Haddad expressed their quest to preserve the unity of Libyan soil and noted that some countries are interfering in Libyan affairs and do not want the country to be stable. The meeting between the leaders of the Libyan armed forces was called to complete what was discussed earlier and implement what they agreed upon.

On March 17, the UN envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily, called upon Libyan rivals to engage in talks to unify Libya's military institutions and create a safe environment to hold the country's long-awaited elections. Two meetings of the 5+5 joint military committee took place in April, the first in Tripoli and the second in Benghazi. The 5+5 Joint Military Committee comprises five members from the Libyan government military in western Libya and five other members from Haftar's forces in the east.

The committee has been holding UN-sponsored meetings over the past two years to guarantee a continued ceasefire and conduct talks on unifying the military in Libya. The country has been ravaged by civil war and instability since the ousting of longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The announcement by the leaders of the Libyan armed forces is seen as a positive step in ensuring a peaceful and stable future for the country.
