China Sanctions US Entities Over Tsai-Mccarthy Meeting

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) TOKYO, April 7 (KUNA) -- The Chinese Foreign Ministry announced on Friday sanctions on the Hudson Institute, the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in the US and their responsible persons in response to the recent meeting between US House Speaker Kevin McCarthy and Taiwanese President Tsai Ing.
"Despite China's repeated representations and resolute opposition, the US insisted on allowing Taiwan leader Tsai Ing-wen to "transit" the US to engage in Political activities from March 29 to 31 and April 4 to 6.
The Hudson Institution and the Reagan Library have provided a platform and convenience for Tsai to engage in "Taiwan independence" separatist activities in the US, which seriously violated the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiques, and seriously undermined China's sovereignty and territorial integrity," the ministry said in a statement.
The announcement came after Tsai met McCarthy, the third highest-ranking official of the US government, in California on Wednesday during a stopover in Los Angeles on her return from Central America tour. It was the third time a Taiwanese president has met with a US House speaker since Taiwan and US ended official diplomatic relations in 1979, and the first time the encounter has taken place on US soil.
Under the countermeasures, universities, institutions and other organizations and individuals in China are strictly restricted from conducting transactions, exchanges and cooperation and other activities with them. The sanctions also targeted four senior officials of the two entities, freezing their property in China, prohibiting their transactions, cooperation and other activities with Chinese organizations and individuals, as well as suspending visa issuance for them, the ministry said.
China and Taiwan separated after a civil war in 1949, but Beijing regards the island as its territory. (end)
