Russian Official Warns Arrest Warrant for Putin Would Be "Declaration of War"

(MENAFN) Dmitry Medvedev, the deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, has warned that an attempt to arrest Russian President Vladimir Putin under an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant would amount to a "declaration of war." This follows the ICC's recent issuance of an arrest warrant for Putin over alleged war crimes in Ukraine.

Medvedev questioned the competence of German Justice Minister Marco Buschmann, who had previously stated that if Putin arrived in Germany, he would be arrested. Medvedev stated that such an action would be a "casus belli" or a cause of war, and that it would result in Russia launching weapons at Germany's parliament and chancellor's office.

In a separate statement, Medvedev called the issuance of a warrant for Putin's arrest a "collapse of international law." He noted that the biggest states did not join the ICC and that, over the course of its existence, the court had only prosecuted "three dozen unknown individuals."

This statement underscores the continued tensions between Russia and Western nations, particularly over the conflict in Ukraine. The possibility of an ICC arrest warrant for Putin only adds fuel to this already volatile situation. It is important for all parties to prioritize diplomacy and seek peaceful solutions to conflicts.
