Two Killed, 16 Injured In Egypt Train Accident

(MENAFN- Khaama Press) A train derailed, causing at least two kills and 16 injuries, in Qalyub, a city in the Qalyubia Governorate located about 23 kilometres north of Cairo, the capital of Egypt.

According to the Egyptian health Ministry, 10 of the 16 injured victims were being treated at the Qalyub Specialty Hospital, and their injuries were not life-threatening, Xinhua reported.

Egyptian National Railways said in a statement that the train passed through the“closed semaphore” at the Qalyub Train Station and was travelling towards a blocked railway when it struck the safety barrier at the end of the railway.

According to the statement, the locomotive and the first carriage derailed, and the Egyptian Transportation Ministry established a committee to investigate the incident.

Poorly maintained infrastructure and ineffective management have long been problems with Egypt's railway system, frequently leading to derailments and accidents involving trains.

In 2021, a railway accident in the southern Egyptian city of Tahta resulted in at least 32 fatalities. 11 persons were killed later that year when a train derailed in Qalyubia.
