Poll discloses Republicans’ preferences for 2024 contest

(MENAFN) A recent survey conducted by the Berkeley Institute of Governmental Studies (IGS) has found that a majority of registered Republicans in California favor Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as the Republican Party's candidate for the 2024 presidential race. The poll, which took place between February 14 and 20, included responses from 1,755 registered Republican voters in California.

According to the survey, around 37 percent of respondents stated that they would support DeSantis as the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential race, with former President Donald trump coming in second place with 29 percent of the vote. Meanwhile, other potential Republican candidates, such as former United States Envoy to the United Nation Nikki Haley and former Vice President Mike Pence, received support from no more than 7 percent of California's GOP voters.

Interestingly, the survey also found that among Republican voters in California with a college degree, DeSantis received more than twice the support of Trump. Similarly, even among those who voted for Trump in the 2020 presidential election, DeSantis leads by 11 points.

Mark DiCamillo, director of the IGS Poll, noted that there appears to be "serious defection" among Trump's supporters in California, who now seem to be more in favor of DeSantis as the Republican nominee. These results could prove to be significant in the upcoming Republican presidential primary, as California's GOP voters may play a pivotal role in determining who runs for president on the Republican ticket.

DeSantis himself is expected to visit California soon, with plans to give a speech at the Reagan Library Presidential Library in Simi Valley and a fundraiser for the Orange County GOP on March 5. The visit could be seen as an attempt to solidify his support among California's Republican voters and gain momentum for a potential presidential bid in 2024.
