Lufthansa Cancels Over 1,300 Flights Due to Public Sector Employee Strikes in Germany

(MENAFN) Lufthansa, the flag carrier of Germany, has been compelled to cancel over 1,300 flights due to airport strikes across Germany, the airline announced on Thursday.

The strike action was initiated by the Verdi trade union for public sector employees in Frankfurt/Main, Munich, Stuttgart, Hamburg, Dortmund, Hanover, and Bremen airports.

The airline declared that as a result of the strike, it has been compelled to terminate its flight operations at its German hubs, mainly Frankfurt and Munich, for the day, which would lead to the cancellation of more than 1,300 flights scheduled for Friday.

In a statement released by Lufthansa, it indicated that passengers who have been affected by the cancellations have already been informed, and where possible, the airline is offering alternate connections and rebooking on rail.

The airline also expressed regret about the extensive impact of the warning strike, which has been carried out at the expense of its passengers.

Additionally, the airline stated that it is not a party to the collective bargaining and has no influence over it. Despite this, it emphasized that both its guests and the airline have been severely affected.

Lufthansa indicated that regular operations are anticipated to return to normal as early as Saturday. The airline is not the only transportation provider affected by the strikes; it is likely to create a domino effect, causing widespread disruptions in rail travel, public transportation, and shipping operations.

The strikes, which resulted from the unresolved collective bargaining negotiations, have affected a large portion of the public transportation sector in Germany, causing significant travel chaos for many people.

The German Air Traffic Control also advised travelers to expect significant delays during the period of the strike.
