(MENAFN- Khaama Press) White House Officials on Friday said that a U.S. F-22 military fighter jet shot down an unknown object flying in the U.S. airspace on the coast of Alaska on orders of President Joe Biden.
John Kirby, the White House National Security Council spokesperson said the object was downed because it was flying at about 40,000 feet (about 12,100 meters) and posed a reasonable threat to the safety of civilian flights.
Following the downing of the unknown object, President Joe Biden described it“a success” as the object was posing a possible threat to the safety of civilian flights.
Although White House Officials did not provide any further details in this regard, the twin downings within a week are extraordinary and reflect heightened concerns over China's surveillance program over U.S. airspace.
After the United States F-22 fighter jets brought down the previous surveillance balloon nearly a week ago, China strongly criticized the U.S. for an overreaction and described it as against the rules of international practices.
According to Pentagon officials, the object was relatively small in size and roamed over one of the most desolate places in the United States.
Meanwhile, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a tweet that he had been briefed and supported the decision to shoot down the unknown object flying over the U.S. airspace near Canada.“Our military and intelligence services will always work together,” he said.
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a statement saying it was“not a National Weather Service balloon”, and it is still not clear the flying object belongs to which country.
