For the first time, the chief guest at India's republic day will be a leader from Egypt this year.

Ambassador Wael Mohamed Awad Hamed said the invitation to President Abdel Fattah El Sisi for the Republic Day celebration is“truly historic” because not even President Kamal Abdul Nasser was invited to India's Republic Day during the“heyday” of India-Egypt friendship in the 1950s and 1960s.

India and Egypt's relationship has recently improved due to increased high-level bilateral visits and security and defence cooperation between the two countries.

India has invited Egypt to attend the G-20 meeting as a“guest country,” Rajnath Singh, the Indian defence minister, and S. Jaishankar, the country's external affairs minister, paid visits to Cairo in September and October 2022, respectively.

The Egyptian envoy added,“Bilaterally, we have a growing relationship with trade regarding investment, these are growing by the day, and they will reach new potentials over the coming years.”

On the other hand, Egypt's Ambassador to India spoke about strategic relations while laying out the new strategic partnership between the two-sided“security of the Suez Canal and the Red Sea connects Egypt with India and the Indian Ocean”, he stated.

The strategic cooperation between India and Egypt will enhance military cooperation, mainly Egyptian, with the offer of military hardware, which India is willing to offer. On the other hand, both the country will hold joint military exercises with Special Forces in Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaipur of India, added the Egyptian envoy.

He urged both countries to look forward to the new opportunities and untapped potential.” Ambassador added that energy security and food security are the issues that have become increasingly important in light of the Ukraine crisis,” Ambassador added.
