Lula requests "federal intervention’ " to quell riots

(MENAFN) Following the invasion of Congress, the Supreme Court, and the presidential Planalto Palace by hundreds of Jair Bolsonaro's right-wing followers, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has proclaimed a state of emergency in the Federal District of Brasilia.

The Marxist leader, who was only recently sworn in, issued the directive on Sunday and designated justice minister Ricardo Garcia Capelli to serve as the commander of the "federal intervention’." Capelli is authorized under Lula's directive to request from civil and military authorities "the necessary means to achieve the object of the intervention."

By Sunday evening, riot police deploying tear gas and water cannons had succeeded in regaining control of the government buildings after many hours of fighting. As the justice minister forewarned that further arrests would be made throughout the night in an effort to identify everyone engaged in what he described as an act of "terrorism" and an attempted "coup," authorities reported that at least 300 individuals had been detained.

The emergency order, though, is still in place till the end of the month. The scope of the order is limited to Brasilia’s Federal District, and its stated aim is to “end the serious compromising of public order in the State in the Federal District, marked by acts of violence and invasion of public buildings.”
