Rescuers in Italy are looking for missing people

(MENAFN) Rescuers from Italy are looking for a dozen individuals who have gone missing on the southern island of Ischia after a major avalanche killed at least one person.

Early Saturday, a tsunami of mud and debris surged over the little village of Casamicciola Terme, swallowing at least one house and carrying automobiles down to the sea.

According to Italian news agency AGI, rescuers retrieved the body of a 31-year-old woman, while other local media said 13 others were injured in the event.

According to Claudio Palomba, a local official, over a dozen individuals were still missing early Sunday. However, he stated that other persons who had previously been reported missing have been located safely, including one family with a newborn baby.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni expressed her condolences to those impacted and announced an emergency cabinet meeting on Sunday to examine the incident.

“We are afraid that there might be other victims, but so far the current figure is one dead,” according to Luca Cari, a representative for the fire service.

Rain and heavy winds impeded the rescue attempt, as did boats carrying reinforcements from the mainland.
