Lt. Gen Asim Munir Announced New Army Chief Of Pakistan


(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) ISLAMABAD, Nov 24 (KUNA) -- Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif on Thursday decided to appoint Lt. General Asim Munir as the next Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and General Sahir Shamshad Mirza as Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee (CJCSC).
Information Minister of Pakistan Marriyum Aurangzeb made the announcement saying the premier had made the choice while exercising his constitutional powers. She confirmed that a summary of the same had been sent to the President of Pakistan, Dr. Arif Alvi.
The Defence Minister of Pakistan, Khawaja Asif, told media that the 'advice' had been forwarded to President Alvi.
Lt Gen Asim Munir has served in many top military appointments including the Director General of Military Intelligence and the Inter-Services Intelligence chief.
The top military appointment announcements came a day after the outgoing COAS, General Qamar Javed Bajwa, reaffirmed the military's resolve to remain in its constitutional domain and stay away from interfering into political affairs during his farewell speech.
The chief said that now the time has come when all the stakeholders should learn from their past mistakes and move forward by setting aside their personal ego. He stressed the need for adopting a true democratic culture in Pakistan by ending the environment of intolerance.
The COAS is set to retire on November 29th after commanding the army for six years. His service tenure was extended for three years by the former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan in 2019. (end)
