The Ministry of Municipality yesterday held a ceremony to celebrate the joining of three Qatari cities — Doha, Al Rayyan and Al Daayen to Unesco Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC).
GNLC, an international, policy-oriented network provides inspiration, know-how and the best practices.
The event was held in coordination with Qatar National Commission for Education, Culture and Science (QWNCECS) and Unesco Gulf States and Yemen Office.
Minister of Municipality H E Dr. Abdullah bin Abdulaziz bin Turki Al Subaie, Minister of Education and Higher Education H E Buthaina bint Ali Al Jabr Al Nuaimi and a number of other senior officials attended the event.
The three cities Doha, Al Rayyan and Al Daayen received the membership of Unesco GNLC in September this year, following Al Wakra, Al Shamal and Al Sheehaniya, which had obtained memberships before, bringing the total number of Qatari cities that joined the network to six.
Preparations are underway to complete the procedures to enable the remaining two municipalities (Umm Salal, Al Khor-and-Al Thakhira) to join the Unesco's GNLC.
Minister of Municipality said that one of the most important ways to deal with the challenges facing the world today lies in empowering community members to find solutions that benefit their societies.
The Minister said that Qatar's sustainable development efforts across several sectors have won praise of relevant international authorities.
Read Also The Minister noted that there was fruitful cooperation between the Ministry of Municipality and a number of ministries and state institutions aimed at raising the quality of life of the population in order to achieve Qatar National Vision 2030, and meet sustainable development goals, especially the quality education.
At the conclusion of the celebration, the directors of the municipalities of the three cities were honoured.
Certificates were received by Mansour Ajran Al Buainain, Director of Doha Municipality, Jaber Hassan Al Jaber, Director of Al Rayyan Municipality and Rashid Mashlash Al Khayareen, Director of Al Daayen Municipality.
Assistant Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs at the Ministry of Municipality Mansour Abdullah bin Zaid Al Mahmoud said that the joining of six Qatari cities to Unesco GNLC shows the leading role of Qatar in the field of education and its development policies in providing equal educational opportunities, and its interest in all segments of society, especially women, the elderly, people with special needs and workers.
He said that this also demonstrates the state's commitment to achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals and its focus in the context of lifelong learning and quality of education and building sustainable societies.
The joining of Qatari cities to Unesco GNLC is a culmination of the efforts of the Ministry of Municipality represented by the municipalities, including its strategy of adopting the concept of sustainability through the implementation of programmes, projects and initiatives in cooperation and partnership with civil society institutions.
