Srinagar- The residents of Garipora and Hyderia Colony localities of Bemina in the city outskirts have urged the authorities to macadamize roads in the locality. Locals say they have long complained of bumpy rides but authorities have failed to get the roads blacktopped.
The construction of a drainage network in the area has left roads in pathetic condition and with passing of every vehicle walking of pedestrians becomes a nightmare with dust all over the place.
Residents say the one kilometer road stretch from Garipora to Khomeini chowk is in shambles and work on the drainage system is going at a snail's pace.
The Officials of Srinagar Municipal Corporation, negating such claims, say most of the drainage work has been completed and it is a matter of time that the road will be macadamized.
“The roads had been dug for drainage work, since then the road has been dusty”, said Javeed Akhoon, a resident of Khomeini Chowk.
“I work at a Bank, I leave the house with properly ironed clothes and reach the office dusty” Javeed said.
“Authorities are delaying macadamization for reasons better known to them” he added.
However, officials say the work on the Drainage is nearing completion and timely macadamization will put an end to people's woes.
People also complain, due to bad roads Rickshaw drivers overcharge the passengers.
Passengers say, in most cases rickshaw drivers refuse to travel these areas due to bad roads. Even if they agree, they charge heavily.
“For a distance of one kilometer, rickshaw drivers charge fares from Rs 200 to Rs 300. This is sheer injustice” said a female commuter from Khomeni Chowk.
“It is sad that authorities are doing nothing to address the issue” she added.
Kashmir Observer made multiple attempts to contact Regional Transport Officer Kashmir Sajid Yahya Naqash but he did not respond to repeated phone calls.
As the summer season is coming to an end, locals fear a long winter with bad roads awaits them, however authorities speak otherwise.
Speaking to Kashmir Observer, Superintending Engineer Drainage Circle, Srinagar Municipal Corporation Abdul Khaliq said the most of the drainage work has been completed, however it is going to take some time.
“The drainage of the road around Imambargah Ayatollah Yusuf has been completed and the drainage pipes have been laid, there are some lanes where work is yet to get completed” Khaliq said.
“We will ensure by December 2022 the project will be completed” he said.
