The Taliban government authorities say that due to the catastrophic flooding in several areas of the central Afghan province of Ghazni, the Kabul-Kandahar highway has been closed to traffic.

According to the Taliban government's Ministry of Public Works, the Kabul-Kandahar highway is closed to traffic in the areas around the Darwaza-e-Balkh in the provincial center, Bakhtar state news agency reported on Monday.

Lewanay Bazar and Dorahi Mushaki regions of the Qarabagh district in Ghazni province are also affected by the powerful floods, closing the roads to traffic and the provincial capital.

Local sources say that heavy downpours have been falling in Ghazni's provincial capital and some of its districts since Monday at noon, causing catastrophic flooding.

Sources further added that hundreds of passengers were trapped in the flood waters.

Authorities in Ghazni province, however, have also advised people about the flooding in the Zana Khan district, which is southeast of the province, and have issued a warning to stay away from the river.

All passengers on the Kabul-Kandahar highway, which traverses Kabul, Zabul, Ghazni, Maidan Wardak, and Kandahar provinces, have been urged to avoid using this route until further notice.
