Sonia Vera said: 'Not complying with the ruling would be an international scandal.'

QUITO, ECUADOR, August 9, 2022 /EINPresswire.com / -- The Government of Ecuador reacted quickly to the announcement of the habeas corpus (under number 13U02- 2022-00338) appeal granted last Friday to the former vice president of Ecuador. According to the president of the Ecuadorian country, Guillermo Lasso, through a statement shared on his Twitter account yesterday: 'the institutions of the Ecuadorian State will file the corresponding legal remedies and will not take any decision to release any citizen who violates the legal system and contributes to the judicial anarchy to which some judges try to take us.'

Regarding these statements, Sonia Vera, a member of Jorge Glas' international defense team, coordinated by Christophe Marchand, says that 'although we are very happy about the announcement of Jorge's release, given that his state of health is extremely serious and impossible to treat in a prison environment, we find the State's involvement in judicial decisions inadmissible. This is the second habeas corpus granted to Jorge Glas. After 40 days of being free, the first was declared null and void due to interference by state authorities, and the judge who granted him this benefit was dismissed. The granting of habeas corpus is the only way to guarantee the rights that by law correspond to every prisoner, such as health care. The refusal by the State could be considered inhuman and degrading treatment.'

As explained by the magistrate in charge of the granting of habeas corpus, this measure is motivated by the violation of the rights to physical integrity and health, because besides his health problems were justified, they had not been treated in a specialized and comprehensive way in prison. This is based on the latest report of Dr. Luis Amaya, a doctor at Prison 4 in Quito who, in his report of July 22, 2022, states among his conclusions that on the part of the SNAI as well as on the part of the Ministry of Public Health 'adequate health care cannot be guaranteed if the technological tools available to do so fail or do not allow it to be done.' The unavailability of technological tools can affect the quality and warmth of medical care, and Dr. Amaya affirmed that in the prison where Jorge Glas was located, 'there are no supplies such as saturator, tensiometer, thermometer, and otoscope, the wick is elementary for medical care' Moreover, in this center, 'there are poorly calibrated medical supplies, there are no medicines at the first level or the hospital level.' He concluded that 'people in detention centers have radical limitations to acquire medicines on their own and there are persons deprived of liberty that have diagnoses that escape the resolving capacity of general medicine.'

Sonia Vera says in this regard: 'the situation of Jorge Glas is unsustainable, so is it that an international oversight of MEPs led by Manu Pineda sent yesterday a preliminary report to the authorities of the European Parliament, warning about the systematic violation of the rights of my defendant, to review by the European authorities of the democratic clause within the trade agreement between Ecuador and the EU, since there is a flagrant violation of my client's human rights.'

If this habeas is annulled again, Jorge Glas would be denied fundamental rights such as the right to life, physical integrity, and access to penitentiary benefits that by law correspond to him since more than 20 months ago. For the time being, we will have to wait to see if once again the Government of his country, through its illegitimate game of exercising power, is stronger than justice. 'Given this scenario, we would present new urgent measures before the human rights mechanisms,' Vera said.

For the record, the Habeas Corpus number is: 13U02- 2022-00338
