University To Host Debates On North Africa Image

São Paulo – The International Center of Arab and Islamic Studies (CEAI ) of the federal University of Sergipe will hold online from Friday (20) through Tuesday (24) the international event“Altered States Seminars: (Re)Imagining Politics in North Africa (2021-2021)”. It will include three debates to be streamed on YouTube. Pictured, a street in Cairo.

On May 24, from 7 to 9 pm (BRT), Egyptian writer and researcher Mukhtar Saad Shehata will give the lecture“January Revolution 2011 and Creative Explosion: Between revolutionary literature and the Revolution's literature.”

Shehata holds a master's degree in Contemporary History, African Studies and Indigenous People from the State University of Bahia (UNEB) and is currently an affiliated researcher at the Leibniz-Zentrum Moderner Orient in Berlin. The moderation will be by CEAI director and professor Geraldo Adriano Campos. The debates will be in English featuring translation into Portuguese.

Senegal's professor Amy Niang talked on Friday from 9 to 11 am (you can watch the recording) about the Conceptualizations of the African States and Its Critiques, featuring moderation by Murilo Bon Meihy, director of the Laboratory of Oriental Studies of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). Niang is a professor in Political Science at The Africa Institute and has taught at the Mohammed VI Polytechnic University in Morocco. She spoke in English, featuring translation into Portuguese.

Historian Mahfouz Ag Adnane from Mali will speak on Monday (23) from 7 to 9 pm on the Political Transformations in North Africa from 2011 to 2021, featuring moderation by CEAI researcher Mohamed Ag Mohamed. The Malian historian holds a PhD from the Pontifical Catholic University (PUC) of São Paulo and the University of Cairo. This lecture will be given in Portuguese.

The seminars invite intellectual and artists from different countries to establish crossed perspectives on selected topics. The event is held in partnership with the Laboratory of Oriental Studies of the UFRJ, the Post-Graduation Program in Cultural Studies of the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul (UFMS) and Argentina's organization CineFertil.
