Arab Human Rights Institutions Stress Need To Promote Sdgs

Doha: The General Secretariat of the Doha-based Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions took part in a regional symposium held in Tunis under the title“The Future of Education in the Arab Countries.. Policies, Approaches and Solutions”.

The symposium was organised by the Arab Institute for Human Rights, in partnership with the organisation. The Arab League for Human Rights, the Arab Lawyers Union, the Tunisian League for the Defense of Human Rights, and the Network of Arab NGOs for Development.

Presenting a working paper on the role of national human rights institutions in developing education policies in Arab countries, Secretary-General of the Arab Network for National Human Rights Institutions Sultan bin Hassan Al Jamali called for cooperation, synergy and solidarity to bring about the desired change in the UNESCO report on education.

He said that the recommendations of the Arab Networks events and conferences confirmed this need, and were dedicated to and activated to the role of national human rights institutions in implementing and following up the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030, including Goal 4, through its focus on the implementation of Goal 16 as the key to implementing the Sustainable Development Goals.

He stressed the importance of peace, justice and strong institutions, including transparency, accountability, anti-corruption and governance, to implement the Sustainable Development Goals.

He pointed out that the right to education is one of the basic rights guaranteed by all international and regional charters and treaties, explaining that national human rights institutions established in accordance with the Paris Principles 1993 have a broad mandate to promote and protect human rights in their countries. This mandate includes all rights stipulated in the international legitimacy of human rights, especially the rights stipulated in the conventions to which its countries are party.
He stressed the need to find political will and resources to complete the work on Goal 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals, and what it constitutes of international solidarity, in order to succeed in reaching strong institutions that contribute to the implementation of Goal 4 on education.

He called on the Arab national human rights institutions that are members of the Arab Network to work in accordance with the recommendations emanating from the Networks conferences in this regard, including contributing to the activation of the Sustainable Development Goals 2030 by calling for their inclusion in national plans and public policies, and expressing opinion and advice to governments and parliaments; in order to review national laws and their compatibility with the purposes and objectives of the Sustainable Development Goals.

He stressed the need for the Arab Network of National Human Rights Institutions to continue, in partnership with relevant international and regional institutions, to build the capacities of Arab national institutions in the implementation and measurement of the Sustainable Development Agenda 2030, to monitor progress in its implementation, and to facilitate the exchange of experiences among them in this field.
