Doha: The most recent results of the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2022 has placed the College of Law at Qatar University (QU) among the top 250 law schools worldwide. This marks the first time the College of Law has featured in a global ranking. This result places the College second among all law schools in the Arab world and in the top 50 law schools in Asia.

Welcoming this, Acting Dean of the College of Law, Dr. Muna Al Marzouqi commented:“This result is based on many years of effort and arises from the hard work of all members of our college — both past and present.”

The QS World University Rankings is among the most important and highly regarded university rankings. QS annually ranks universities overall but also ranks universities by specific subject areas such as science, law and engineering. In 2022, Qatar University achieved its highest overall ranking of 224. Law is one of six new entries for QU in the QS subject rankings 2022.

The QS rankings are based on a number of measurable criteria. This includes the quality of research published by each college, based on how many times a publication is cited by subsequent works, which accounts for 20% of the rating. The more weighted criterion informing the ranking of law colleges around the world is the domestic and international reputation a college enjoys among employers and other academics in the same field, which accounts for 80% of the ranking result.

In addition, QS conducts local and international surveys in order to collect data on the reputation of a college. Therefore, the results reflect not only the high regard in which the College of Law is held, but also the quality and impact of its graduates in the broader community.

Chair of the College of Law Ranking Committee Dr. Andrew Dahdal said:“This result did not happen overnight. For many years now, the college has been focused on encouraging high impact research in top quality international journals in Arabic, English and French. The college has also engaged with local stakeholders and formed important institutional links and partnerships with ministries, industry and global universities.”

The College of Law is the leading law school in Qatar offering an undergraduate law programme in Arabic. It also offers Masters Level programmes in Public Law and Private Law and recently launched its PhD programme. It is worth mentioning that the College of Law has received international academic accreditation from the British Accreditation Council for Independent Further and Higher Education (BAC), and international accreditation from the High Council for Evaluation of Research and Higher Education (HCERES) in France for its Bachelor in Law programme.
