South African police convicts man over fire break-out in parliament

(MENAFN) On Monday, South African Police reported that they convicted an individual with arson due to a fire that resulted in severe damages on the national parliament building in Cape Town, as firefighters had a hard time with distinguishing the final remnants of the explosion.

The fire took place on Sunday morning at the parliamentary building, which has ancient places that go back to 1884, including the National Assembly, or lower House of Parliament.

The 49-year-old man who was taken by the police is set to appear in trial on Tuesday January 3, and will encounter accusations of housebreaking and theft in addition to arson, stated an elite police unit known as the Hawks.

Hawks representative Nomthandazo Mbambo informed eNCA TV, “It is alleged that he gained entrance through the window in one of the offices,” adding “there is a possibility of other charges being added as there was a security breach here.”
