Afghanistan - Talks held on Af-Pak research, education collaboration

PESHAWAR (Pajhwok): Afghan and Pakistani official are exploring the possibility of collaboration in the fields of education and research.

Led by Taliban's Higher Education Minister Abdul Baqi Haqqani, an eight-member Afghan delegation visited the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Islamabad on Monday.

The team from Afghanistan's Higher Education Ministry includes Academic Affairs Deputy Minister Lotfullah Khairkhwa and Kabul University Chancellor Dr Osama Aziz.

HEC Executive Director Shaista Sohail briefed the visiting delegation on the commission's key initiatives and programmes.

At the National Vocational and Technical Training Commission (NAVTTC), Chairman Javed Hassan received the delegation. The NAVTTC chairman briefed it on its initiatives.

The delegation also visited the National Curriculum Council, where it received a briefing on the Single National Curriculum and its objectives.

Directorate General of Religious Education Project Director Ghulam Qamar and Rehmatul-lil-Alameen Authority Chairman Dr Ijaz Akram briefed the team on the objectives of these institutions.

Meanwhile, Dawn quoted Pakistan's Ambassador to Afghanistan Mansoor Ahmad Khan as saying the delegation would explore further cooperation in the field of higher education.

In December, Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi and Health Minister Dr Qalandar Ibad visited Pakistan and met top officials in Islamabad.

The delegation arrived in Pakistan on Sunday amid calls for reopening of educational institutions for girls in Afghanistan.

The delegation scheduled to visit the Allama Iqbal Open University and Islamic International University in Islamabad today (Tuesday).
