Cabinet follows up on measures to grant pardon in lèse-majesté cases

(MENAFN- Jordan Times) AMMAN — The Cabinet on Wednesday discussed the measures taken to implement the Royal directives pertaining to the issuance of a special pardon to those convicted in lèse-majesté cases.

Justice Minister Ahmed Zyadat reviewed the measures taken in this arena, noting that the ministry in coordination with the Judicial Council, has identified relevant lèse-majesté cases, which violate Article 195 of the Penal Code, and has collected files from the relevant courts.

The cases were divided into three categories: Cases under implementation at reform and rehabilitation centres, cases under execution at the Public Prosecution Office, and cases in which judgements were issued but were not executed by the Public Prosecution, the minister said.

In considering the cases under implementation, the priority has been attached to cases from reform and rehabilitation centres and from the Public Prosecution Office to issue a special pardon soon, which would ensure the release of those who were convicted.

His Majesty King Abdullah last Saturday directed the government to look into all cases related to lèse-majesté, which violate Article 195 of the Penal Code and in which final rulings have been issued, in order to grant a special pardon to those convicted in such cases.
