Following the conclusion of the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 this month, Alibaba Cloud, the digital technology and intelligence backbone of Alibaba Group, has pulled off a series of first-of-its-kind technological innovations at the international multi-sport event by showcasing its cloud computing and artificial intelligence expertise.
As the world shifts to a more digitally-driven future, Alibaba Cloud used its technolo-gy to add new exciting elements to the Olympic games by connecting global audiences to high-definition content and enabled media professionals to maintain social interac-tions with safe distancing.
To begin its activities at this year's Olympics in Tokyo, Alibaba Group, a Worldwide TOP Partner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), unveiled the Alibaba Cloud Pin, a cloud-based digital pin, for broadcasting and media professionals. The pin could be worn either as a badge or attached to a lanyard and digital wearable was designed to enable media professionals working at the International Broadcasting Cen-tre (IBC) and Main Press Centre (MPC) to engage with each other and exchange social media contact information in a safe and interactive manner.
The pin enabled users to meet and greet each other, adding people to their 'friend list', and exchange daily activity update. This could be done easily by tapping their pins together at arm's length, bearing in mind the social distancing measures.
The digital pins also included specific designs of each of the 33 sports on the Tokyo 2020 Programme, which could be unlocked through a list of playful tasks like making new friends. To activate the pin, users simply need to download a Cloud Pin application, and pair it with the wearable device via its bluetooth function. Following the launch of Alibaba Cloud Pin, the group created a new cloud-based solution to help Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 onsite staff reduce the risk of getting heat-stroke during the summer in Tokyo.
Through an intelligent ear-worn device, the technology helped keep track of the body temperature and heart rate of the Olympic onsite staff in Tokyo. Based on the body temperature, heart rate and the environment index, a cloud-based system identified the level of heatstroke risk in real time for individual working staff. Alerts were sent to those being exposed to a high level of risk along with recommended precautionary measures – such as drinking more water – to reduce the chances of getting heatstroke. The heat index in the surrounding environment including temperature, humidity and direct or radiant sunlight was monitored through multiple heat stress WBGT (Wet Bulb Globe Temperature) meters set up at 14 Olympic competition venues. Leveraging Alibaba technologies, Content+, OBS' content delivery platform is now fully migrated to the cloud for delivering short-form content, content asset management and content production.
Delivering short-form content
During Tokyo 2020, between 7,000 and 9,000 short-form content clips were pro-duced by the OBS Content+ crew to help enhance RHB coverage. 17 RHB organisations and four news agencies subscribed to the full service of receiving those clips through a user-friendly web-based interface.
Content asset management
Through Content+, RHBs will be able to access all Olympic content produced by the OBS including live content as it is being produced. 31 RHB organisations signed up for this full service to be able to easily browse through the low-resolution files in near real-time, and retrieve any content in any of their global facilities.
Content production
Used as part of post-production workflow, OBS used the Content+ platform for re-mote editing and standards conversion; a feature that will be extended as a service to the RHBs for future Olympics.
