106 militants including 22 al Qaeda-linked terrorists killed in Helmand clashes

KABUL: Officials in the southern province of Helmand say of the killing of 106 militants including 22 al-Qaeda affiliates, adding that another 37 wounded.

Provincial Governor Mohammad Nabi Ilham said that the Taliban staged attacks on several security outposts in the districts of Nawa, Nehr-e-Seraj and Garmsir as well as in the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah. He said that eight Taliban commanders were among the killed.

The ministry of defense said that 22 al-Qaeda affiliates were killed in clashes. According to the ministry, the al-Qaeda affiliates belong to Punjab state of Pakistan.

Head of Helmand provincial council, Attaullah Afghan said that Lashkar Gah was on the verge of collapsing to the Taliban if the government didn''t pay serious attention to the security situation there.

The officials that the militants suffered heavy casualties as part of the counter attack by the Afghan security forces.

The ministry of defense said that hundred of commandos arrived in Lashkar Gah to push the Taliban's attack back.

A Taliban Spokesman, Qari Yousaf Ahmadi, said in a tweet that the militants stormed several checkpoints in Lashkar Gah. The militants claimed that three Afghan security forces were killed in Kajaki district of the province.
