The current research focus of Prof Dries Velthuizen is peace, conflict and security studies in Africa, from an African Knowledge Systems (AKS) perspective. He is an NRF rated researcher in the field of humanities; sub-field Politics and Public Administration; sub-sub field African Conflict Studies with oven twenty articles or book chapters published in accredited journals, together with several short articles. He also co-published a book on Restorative Justice in Africa.
Dries Velthuizen holds a D Litt et Phil degree, awarded by the University of South Africa (UNISA), for a dissertation with the title 'The Management of Knowledge: A Model for the African Renaissance'. The dissertation included academic field research in Uganda, Rwanda, Tanzania and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). He also completed a BA (Hons) and a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies from the same university, after completing an initial BA degree in International Politics.
Currently, Prof Velthuizen is with the Thabo Mbeki African School for Public and International Affairs, Unisa where he is doing trans-disciplinary research into violent conflict prevention in Africa. Other academic activities include teaching decision-making for conflict resolution in Africa, the management of democratic elections in Africa and the development of qualifications. He also traveled extensively for research purposes and attended and presented at academic conferences and seminars in several African countries and all continents.
He is a Paul Harris fellow of Rotary International and a member of the Rotary E-Club of District 9400 (Southern Africa) where he appropriately focuses on peace and conflict resolution as a member and leader of a vocational training team responsible for training community mediators in Africa.
