São Paulo – Brazilian children and teens aged nine to 15 who live in Palestine can enter the 1st Portuguese as a Heritage Language Olympics. The contest is an initiative from the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. It has been held in several different countries, and this will be the first Palestinian edition. Entries opened on April 5 and will be accepted through May 31.

The purpose is to encourage kids from the Brazilian community in Palestine to study Brazilian Portuguese and their own culture, as well as to spread the culture and the language, and to enhance national identity among students. The Olympics are hosted by the Brazilian Representative Office in Ramallah. In a recent interview with ANBA, the Office's head, ambassador Alessandro Candeas, said he is looking to rekindle the 'Brazility' of second-generation Brazilians living in Palestine.

The contest will have one category for kids aged 9 to 12 and one for teens aged 13 to 15. The kids will take an oral test consisting of either a song, a poem declamation, conversation, or a spoken-word presentation. The teen category will comprise two phases: one multiple-choice test and a written essay or oral test.

The Olympics are intended as an in-person event but may take place online due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The event is slated for June and July, and winners will be announced in late August. An award ceremony will be held on Brazil's National Day, in September. Plaques will be given to three winners in each category.
