Tax revenue in Sri Lanka up 21 percent

Nadun Guruge, Inland Revenue Department (IRD) Commissioner General of Sri Lanka, said on Monday that Sri Lanka has seen a rise of 21 percent in its tax revenue collection in the earlier year 2019 in comparison with a year before in 2018.

The official said that the IRD provisionally made USD4.3 billion in the year, slightly under the USD4.4 billion target that was set for the year.

The performance of the IRD in 2019 registered a rise of 21 percent in comparison with the total tax revenue collected in 2018 of USD3.5 billion, the official added.

The IRD in the country made 10,000 new tax files and flied 434 cases against defaulters in 2019.

He also said that no tax revenue target has been assigned yet for 2020 as the IRD is waiting the Ministry of Finance decision.
