Sri Lanka- Kurunegala doctor challenges arrest


(MENAFN- Colombo Gazette) The doctor attached to the Kurunegala hospital who was accused of carrying out illegal surgical operations on women, filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition in the Supreme Court today.

Filed by his lawyer, Dr. Seigu Siyabdeen Mohammed Safi has sought the intervention of the court to dismiss the allegations against him and order his release from detention.

Dr. Seigu Siyabdeen Mohammed Safi has filed the petition against seven people, including the Kurunegala Police, the Director of the CID, Acting IGP, the Defence Secretary and Attorney General.

The doctor was initially arrested over suspicions arising with regards to his assets.

However, later he was accused of illegally sterilizing several women during operations he had conducted, preventing them from being able to give birth again. (Colombo Gazette)
