Arab bloc wants to clamp down on arms trafficking

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) CAIRO, June 23 (KUNA) -- The Arab League on Sunday called on its member states to put in place a comprehensive strategy to cease the illicit trade of small arms and ammunition in efforts to support international peace and security.
The Arab League and European Union need to work together to stop the illegal trade of weapons, said Khaled Al-Habbas, who is in charge of international political affairs at the regional bloc.
Conflicts and other forms of violence are "breeding grounds" for weapons smuggling, the diplomat explained amid talks over the fight against illicit firearms trafficking.
The scourge has become widespread particularly in Arab nations given how rife conflict is in the region, added the diplomat, describing the matter as a "perennial concern" for the international community.
The five-day talks bring together a number of prominent international organizations, chief among them Interpol. (end)
