Doha Metro sets record ridership on Amir Cup final

Doha: The Doha Metro set a new ridership record on the day of Amir Cup final as it carried over 68,000 people on board on Thursday. It was the highest number of people travelled on Doha Metro trains in a single day.


Along with the Metro, fans also used buses to be part of the historic day as Mowasalat transported more than 10,000 spectators and 6,000 students to the stadium.


High number of passenger turn out was expected as world-class Al Janoub Stadium was scheduled to open on Thursday by hosting the final match between Al-Sadd Sports Club and Al-Duhail Sports Club.


Residents were eagerly waiting for the opening of Al Janoub Stadium and many of the fans and spectators chose to reach the stadium by boarding state-of-the-art trains.


'Doha Metro would like to thank everyone who chose to travel with us to the Amir Cup final. Yesterday set a new ridership record of 68,725!, said Qatar Rail in a tweet on Friday.


It was a historic day for Doha Metro as Amir H H Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani travelled on Doha Metro to the Stadium.


For the convenience of fans and spectators, Qatar Rail had extended the service hours of Doha Metro. On regular weekdays, the metro operates from 8am to 11pm but on Friday the last metro from Al Wakrah left at 3 am.


'Watching the Amir Cup final was a memorable experience for me. After hearing so much about Doha Metro from my friends, I decided to take train to Al Janoub Stadium. As expected, it was a wonderful train journey for me which I will remember forever, Abduraham told The Peninsula. 'After getting down at Al Wakrah station, I took the free bus ride to the stadium, he added.


Match ticket holders were allowed free shuttle bus from Al Wakrah Metro Station to and from the stadium.


Doha Metro became a big hit among residents as more than 86,000 people used the trains in the first two days after launch of its preview service. On, May 8 37,451 people used the metro, while on next day 49,096 people were on board, reflecting the huge popularity of Doha Metro.


Mowasalat offered exclusive discounts to game spectators to support the integration of the transfer process with Doha Metro, where it provided a 25 percent flat discount to spectators when booking a trip to Al Wakra Stadium via Karwa Taxi App. Mowasalat had deployed 115 buses that transported over 10,000 out of the 38,678 game spectators, and 75 allocated buses transporting over 6,000 students, as well as providing wheelchair accessible buses to transport their users to and from the stadium. In addition, Mowasalat collaborated with Qatar Rail in the operation of Metro Link feeder buses.
