MENAFN- Asia Times) Two powerful earthquakes have struck the Philippines in the space of two days, killing at least 11 people and injuring more than 100.
Shortly after 5pm on Monday, an earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck the country's main island of Luzon, with its epicenter about 60 kilometers northwest of the capital, Manila. The quake had a depth of 40 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey.
The force of the earthquake made the Anchor Skysuites apartment block in Manila sway so violently that water from its rooftop swimming pool poured down the tower like a waterfall, as seen on a viral video on social media. Another video showed buildings swaying in Manila.
In the capital city, several people were trapped in a collapsed building, and at Clark International Airport in Pampanga province, damage to a terminal building caused the airport to be closed down.
In the town of Porac, five people were reportedly killed by a wall collapsing in a four-story supermarket, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council .
A total of 11 people were killed, and over a hundred people were injured in Manila and Pampanga province after they were hit by falling objects. More than 400 aftershocks have been recorded since the initial quake, said Philippine seismologists.
On Tuesday afternoon, the Philippines was hit by a second powerful earthquake , which registered a magnitude of 6.4 and was centered in Samar, an island in the central eastern part of the country, said the United States Geological Survey.
The second quake hit near Tutubigan, which is hundreds of kilometers south of Monday's epicenter.
