Turkmenistan approves seismic risk reduction program

A program to reduce seismic risk in seismically hazardous areas of Turkmenistan and an action plan for its implementation have been approved in the country, Trend reports with reference to the Turkmen presidential decree.

The document was signed in order to ensure safe social, economic and environmental conditions for the population living in seismically hazardous areas of Turkmenistan, to determine and record the level of seismic hazard, as well as reduce the impact of potential earthquakes.

The Turkmen Ministry of Defense, the Academy of Sciences, as well as other relevant ministries and sectoral departments of Turkmenistan have been instructed to ensure the implementation of the above mentioned program.

Turkmenistan is located in a seismically active zone. On the night of Oct. 6, 1948, Ashgabat experienced a catastrophic earthquake, the magnitude of which reached 10 and claimed many lives.
