Qatar- Minor traffic diversion at Duhail Intersection roundabout

(MENAFN- Gulf Times)

The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has announced that it is implementing a minor diversion at the Duhail Intersection, Al Shamal Road, to facilitate work on the Duhail Intersection upgrade project.
The diversion will be carried out from Friday until January 31.
Ashghal has said in a statement that a partial closure at the intersection will affect road users travelling from Al Khafji Street towards Al Gharrafa Street and Doha, as well as those travelling from Doha towards Al Gharrafa Street or wishing to make a U-turn back towards Doha.
During the period of traffic change, Izghawa Intersection at Exit 5 of Al Shamal Road will become the access point for traffic between the eastern and western areas and Al Shamal Road, as well as Al Kharaitiyat Interchange, Al Kheesa Interchange and Umm Slal Mohammed Interchange, Ashghal has explained.

To reduce inconvenience to the public, Ashghal opened a 3.5km road parallel to Al Shamal Road in December linking the Izghawa and Al Gharrafa areas. The new road extends from Izghawa Street to Al Oyoun Street and provides exit from and access to Al Shamal Road to serve as an alternative route to Duhail Roundabout that is scheduled to close.

* West Bay to Al Gharrafa: During the partial closure, road users travelling from West Bay via Al Khafji Street heading towards Al Gharrafa can take a right turn on Arab League Street towards Izghawa Interchange, or take a right turn on Duhail Street or Duhail Roundabout (which is partially closed) to access Al Shamal Road and use Exit 5 to reach Izghawa Interchange. They should then turn left on the main bridge and take another left turn at the next traffic signal towards Izghawa Interchange to join the newly constructed road to access Al Gharrafa and malls in the area.

* West Bay to Doha: Road users travelling from West Bay via Al Khafji Street heading towards Doha have the option of taking a right turn on Arab League Street or Duhail Street, or taking a right at Duhail Roundabout (which is partially closed), to access Al Shamal Road and use Exit 5 to reach Izghawa Interchange. They should then take a left turn on the main bridge to Al Shamal Road towards Doha.

* Doha to Al Gharrafa: Road users travelling from Doha heading towards Al Gharrafa via Al Shamal Road are to take Exit 5 to reach Izghawa Interchange. At Izghawa Interchange, they should take a left on the main bridge towards Izghawa, continuing straight until they reach the second set of traffic signals and take a left turn to join the newly constructed road. They will then be able to access Al Gharrafa and malls in the area.

* Making a U-turn back to Doha: Road users travelling along Al Shamal Road and coming from Doha, who wish to make a U-turn back to Doha, will be required to use Exit 5 to reach Izghawa Interchange. At this interchange, they should make a U-turn on the main bridge to Al Shamal Road towards Doha.
The authority will instal road signs advising motorists of the changes on the road. It has requested all road users to abide by the 60kmph speed limit and follow road signs to ensure their safety.

* New project: The Duhail Intersection Upgrade Project consists of works of 3.3km of valued at approximately QR800mn. The upgrade consists of a three-level interchange, including two new bridges, providing free-flowing connectivity. Al Shamal Bridge will be replaced by an intersection consisting of three levels in each direction. A new four-lane bridge will be constructed in each direction between Al Khafji Street towards Al Gharrafa Street.
Al Duhail Intersection will be replaced by a new signalised junction under Al Shamal Bridge and also see the removal of Sheikh Faisal Roundabout. In addition, the project will involve the construction of an underpass that will allow road users to exit Al Shamal Road onto the service roads to access the nearby malls. It will also serve as the connection from Al Gharrafa Street towards Al Shamal.
The project consists of a total of 5km of pedestrian and cycling paths along the Duhail and Gharrafa areas and Al Shamal Road.
The upgrade of Duhail Intersection will provide free-flowing traffic in the area, alleviate traffic congestion and reduce travel time by up to 90%. It is expected to be complete in Q4 2021, Ashghal has said.
