Oman- Muscat Municipality calls on community to join efforts to control dengue mosquito

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Muscat- The Muscat Municipality has called on members of the community to join in its efforts to control Aedes aegypti mosquito.

Ismail al Rashdi, head of pest control department in Muscat Municipality in Seeb said that both Muscat Municipality and the Ministry of health are working together to combat breeding of mosquitoes, but there are some practices that all members of the community need to avoid to maintain hygiene and cleanliness.

Raising livestock in residential areas Raising livestock in residential areas or storing foodstuff materials in an unhealthy way could pose threat to health and hygiene. Using untreated wastewater or sewage for irrigation purpose or throwing waste in places not designated for such purposes can also be breeding grounds for pests.

Lack of awareness Lack of awareness among contractors on the potential health risks and legal penalties related to unhealthy construction sites are a major challenge to the civic body. Some contractors fail to provide healthy living spaces for their workers. Lack of proper garbage bins and wastewater connections too can be hazardous to health.

Legal aspect Article 45 of chapter V of Local Order 1/2006 on the protection of public health pointed out that owners of properties are obliged to take measures and precautions to prevent breeding of rodents or spread of mosquitoes, flies and other insects in their properties. Article 46 forbids owners of houses to raise animals or poultry and other birds in residential places. Article 50 prohibits keeping test basins, sewage rooms open or not mending broken ventilation pipes.
