Indian PM's party loses elections in major states

(MENAFN) India's state elections ended with a defeat imposed upon Prime Minister Narendra Modi's party, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

BJP failed to win three key states in Tuesday's elections, marking a major hindrance the party is forced to face since 2014, when the Prime Minister claimed his position.

The elections held this month and the previous one are considered as preparation for the general elections set to carry out in 2019.

The prime minister's party was defeated in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh, the states which were described as the party's strongholds.

Modi stated: "we accept the people's mandate with humility. I thank the people of Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan for giving us the opportunity to serve these states. The BJP Governments in these states worked tirelessly for the welfare of the people."
