Pakistan- Political settlement only way out of Afghan conflict: FM Qureshi


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) MULTAN: Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi said on Sunday Pakistan wanted negotiated political settlement of Afghan conflict which was the only way out of this mess.

He said that peace was must for reconstruction and development of Afghanistan. Talking to media in Multan, he said Pakistan was sincere to an Afghan-owned peace process in Afghanistan and promised to continue playing a positive role in bringing peace and stability in the neighboring country.

He added that US too endorsed Pakistan's point of view and reviewed its position by appointing Zalmay Khalilzad as Special Representative for Afghan reconciliation.

He said during Khalilzad's recent visit to Pakistan, constructive talks were held. He said even Afghan government that was earlier not willing to sit with Taliban, has now also reviewed its decision.

Meetings have been held between representatives of Afghan government and Taliban in Qatar in recent days to work out a solution to the conflict, he said.

The foreign minister said Pakistan was playing a role of a facilitator and assistant for the resolution of Afghan issue.

Talking about tribal areas, he said that tribal areas have been given more funds than its share to bring it on par with developed areas of the country. He said that development projects were underway while sports and cultural activities were being promoted in tribal areas.

When the PTI government came to power, economic situation was dire and financial and trade deficits had reached at a staggering level he said and added that Finance Minister Asad Umar took the bull by the horns and made corrective measures to manage the finances.
