Jordan- Prince Raad honours cornea donors

Amman, Dec 1 (Petra) –– HRH Prince Raad bin Zaid, Chairman of the Board of the Friends of the Eye Bank and the Prevention of Blindness Association, on Saturday attended a ceremony to honor relatives of cornea donors and supporters of the association's activities.

Prince Raad told the donors' relatives that His Majesty King Abdullah appreciated their gestures, and also commended the entities that support the association's activities.

Jordan Islamic Bank Director General, Musa Shehadeh, said that the bank will continue to sponsor the annual ceremony, noting that Prince Raad is keenly interested in maintaining contacts with members of society whose dear ones had donated corneas.

Jordan Eye Bank director, Muawiya al-Bdour, said that corneal disease is one of the key reasons of sight loss, especially among youth, adding that the success rate of corneal transplants in Jordan is up to 80 percent.

He said that Jordan took the lead is establishing the Eye Bank in 1979 to serve a large segment of people who need corneal transplants, adding that local corneal donations amounted to about 5,000, which had successfully been implanted for patients who regained sight.
