The U.S. Department of Labor removed Uzbek cotton from the so-called black list of goods produced using child labor, Uzbek media reported.

The annual list compiled by the Department of Labor's International Labor Affairs Bureau (ILAB) has been published for the eighth time. Uzbek cotton got into it in 2009 when the list came out for the first time.

The Department of Labor notes that the solution of the problem has been achieved thanks to the concerted joint efforts of the government of Uzbekistan, the International Labor Organization (ILO), international non-governmental organizations and the US government.

"The government of Uzbekistan has demonstrated the political will to work towards the eradication of forced labor. Perhaps, it is best expressed by the speech of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev in the UN General Assembly in September 2017, in which he reaffirmed his commitment to solving the problem of forced labor in Uzbekistan," the Department of Labor underlines.

It should be noted that this year the Uzbek government has taken a number of measures to prevent forced labor in collecting cotton. In particular, tariffs have been increased, monitoring has been strengthened to prevent forced labor, a broad information campaign is underway among the population, new mechanisms of accepting complaints against illegal actions of officials have been launched.
