ABU DHABI, 6th May, 2018 (WAM) -- The Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research, ECSSR, will organise a symposium entitled "Terrorism in the Region", on 8th May, at the Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan Hall, at the ECSSR headquarters in Abu Dhabi.

The symposium will highlight how terrorism becomes an increasingly significant issue in our current times, representing a threat to the people of the region and the world, noting that there continues to be people who support, fund, and defend terrorist groups, mainly in order to achieve their own goals.

It will also shed light on the ability of terrorist groups to spread across countries' borders which has made terrorism the greatest threat to regional stability. This was seen when the terrorist organisation Daesh controlled vast areas of Syria and Iraq and succeeded in extending its influence to other countries in the Middle East and beyond, such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, and elsewhere.

The event will also review the political, economic, cultural, and social causes of terrorism, noting that political causes are one of the most important factors that help terrorist groups emerge. This phenomenon cannot be eliminated if its causes are not thoroughly addressed. The problem in this respect is the difference of views in the analysis of the phenomenon itself, given the divergent interpretations of the political, economic, social, and cultural problems that give rise to the phenomenon of terrorism.

Therefore, the symposium organised by the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research is crucial as it will cover two main perspectives; the 1st is terrorism as a threat to regional stability, highlighting the dangers of terrorism and extremist groups in this field and the 2nd perspective is the political reasons underlying the rise of terrorism in the region.
