Pakistan- UN Corner inaugurated at University of Balochistan


(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) QUETTA, 5 October: Students of the University of Balochistan in Quetta will now have access to information on UN priority areas related to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

This information will be available to them through the UN Corner which was inaugurated in the University of Balochistan in Quetta today.

Marcel Stallen, Project Manager, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) inaugurated the corner in the presence of Farman Ulla Anjum, Director General of the Higher Education Commission, Dr Zahoor Ahmed Bazai, Director Quality Assurance Directorate, University of Balochistan, faculty members and students from the university.

The University of Balochistan, Quetta is the oldest educational Institution of higher learning of the province entrusted with the responsibilities to educate and train the potentially talented human resource and manpower to meet the emerging needs of the industry and society.

Speaking on the occasion, Marcel Stallen said:' The University of Balochistan plays a pivotal role in the education of our youth. High quality education is key to help eradicate poverty and hunger in Balochistan. In this connection we are happy to inaugurate the first UN Corner in Balochistan at this university'.

He also said that FAO continually supports University of Balochistan in training and empowering students of the institution.

Dr. Zahoor Ahmed Bazai thanked FAO for its assistance at policy level to promote and develop sustainable agriculture in Pakistan and particularly in Balochistan. He said that it was a matter of pride for the university to be among the 50 universities in Pakistan that will have the UN corner.

The UN corner serves as a single reference point for all the information material regarding UN for University students, teachers and researchers. It is routinely updated with new publications from all UN agencies including magazines, newsletters, research studies and other publications on human rights.

Pakistan is among of the 193 member states of the United Nations making its citizens a part of UN being citizens of the World. Therefore, there is a need to provide opportunities to all young people to increase their knowledge about human rights and activities of the UN.

The UN Corner is established by the United Nations Information Centre in partnership with the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) and the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan.

Dr Munazza Jabeen , Associate Professor , Department of Library and Information Sciences made a presentation about the library of the university and spoke about the importance of UN corner for the students of the university.
