Pakistan- Farmers hold protest demo inside Red Zone to press demands

(MENAFN- Tribal News Network) PESHAWAR, 26 May: Dozens of farmers took to the streets of the federal capital on Friday to protest against the government for not providing them their due rights.

The farmers, under the banner of Pakistan Kissan Ittehad, gathered in D-Chowk of the federal capital's Red Zone to record their protest against the government for not incorporating their recommendations in the federal budget. They chanted slogans against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

According to the protesters, they had time and again presented recommendations to the government but it did not include them in the budget. They demanded that their suggestions should be made part of the annual budget.

The farmers demanded of the government to announce subsidy on electricity and fertilizers and waive off taxes on the import of agriculture related machineries. They also demanded of the government to waive off electricity arrears outstanding against them.

The agitated farmers clashed with the police personnel. They pelted stones at policemen who had gathered there to stop them from moving further. To disperse the protesters, police started firing tear gas shells and water canon. More than 100 protesters were also arrested by the police. According to media reports, several protesters as well as police personnel were injured in the clash.
