'There is a lot of scientific evidence behind power posing'

(MENAFN- Gulf Times) To propel your New Year to new highs, ‘Lead a successful and confident lifestyle', a power-booster of a seminar by How Women Work (HWW), is all set to give you just the inner strength that you need.

To be conducted by Evridiki Iliaki, the Qatar-based Certified Business and Life Coach and Head of HWW, the seminar will take placetodayat6pmat the City Centre Rotana Hotel.Communitycaught up with Iliaki for a chat.

In the seminar, one of the key points of discussion is body posture. Why is body control so important for a successful and confident lifestyle?
Far too many people completely overlook posture and how it's impacting their performance or their everyday lifestyle activities. Posture can have a profound influence on how you feel, function, as well as your overall health. Including back training exercises in your workout regime to make maintaining proper posture is a must as is making sure that you stay consciously aware of your posture throughout the day. Standing up straight can take up to 10 pounds of body weight off your frame, so maintaining good posture is an excellent way to improve the way you look. Maintaining good posture influences a number of things such as your risk of experiencing lower back pain, your energy levels, as well as your focus and concentration.

Could you elaborate this further?
If you are constantly in a slouched position all day long and not using good posture, this means there's far less oxygen coming into the body. Low oxygen levels is one of the contributing factors to fatigue development. Therefore, to help boost confidence and energy levels, proper posture is a must. In my seminar, I don't talk only about a healthy, strong posture, but about power posing as well. This is the act of taking on a posture of confidence, even when you don't feel so confident, to make yourself more dominant. There is a lot of scientific evidence behind power posing. Research shows that standing or sitting a certain way, even for two minutes, raises testosterone levels and lowers cortisol, the stress hormone. These immediate changes in your body chemistry can affect the way you do your job and interact with other people. This, if performed regularly and backed by a success coach, can even have an impact onyour chances of success. With some support, it is very likely to help you accomplish the energy of a leader that you need to develop faster in your career goals.

From your own experience, could you share some points on how you gained control of your life by implementing some of the methods you teach?
Fifteen years ago, I managed to heal myself from a critical medical condition by getting into a fitness routine. I managed to lose 30 kilos and cure myself. As I started to work on my body and be in close contact with my body, I realised how my posture had improved and my self-confidence, too. My body became slimmer but also stronger. At that time, one of my fitness regimes that I chose and still practice was yoga. I used yoga only as a form of exercise and learnt powerful breathing techniques. Among other things, yoga helped me relax, find out more about myself by just being quiet and also learn how to breathe right and deep. This is part of the fitness regime that helped me find my true purpose, which also is the work I do now. I realised how my back needed extra exercise and what type of exercise. Now 15 years on, I still do yoga stretching and breathing exercises that keep my posture strong and healthy.

What are some of the highlights of this seminar?
I would say to understand the importance of a confident posture and how it can affect your professional and personal life. You will realise how choosing the right type of exercise for you, can help you 'listen to your body needs and improve your posture. I will show you how working with your body can change your mindset and create a powerful, confident lifestyle. You will learn a unique, stretching/breathing exercise that if you practise every day will improve your posture and confidence. You will learn a powerful visualisation technique that if you practice every day your posture and confidence will improve. You will learn the body language and power poses of powerful, professional people, and you can ask me personalised questions and I'll answer them. Moreover, you will also receive an exclusive, complimentary discovery session with me and learn more about my Success and Wellness private programme that has helped hundreds. You will have the chance to learn more about HWW and be part of the HWW family.

What are the guiding principles of a successful life that you live by?
The first principle is to have ‘Life Principles'. This, most times, comes from your upbringing and is strongly connected to your morals and values. Right now, I have a very specific specialised, successful lifestyle, tailor-made for me. This is what I am best at and this is why I am popular around the world. I have clients that employ me clearly to help them acquire their own unique, successful lifestyle. I find that extremely important. So I have specific, daily, principles or regimes set for my diet, exercise, and I have a form of positive visualisation exercise that I follow, which is like praying or meditating. My life is devoted to my true purpose in life, which is to do service through my work and that makes me fulfilled and happy. One of the last principles I want to share is something Hippocrates said: 'Count your blessings and your fire/passion will light the way. I am very grateful every day. As time goes by, I feel more and more people will receive and value the benefit of my work.

In what ways does HWW play its part in bringing the community together here in Qatar?
HWW conducts many seminars and conferences; soon we will have our March conference on Woman's Day, which isMarch 8, and in May, we will have our How Women Find Work conference. But also, we have a support group that provides free counselling for women in need, in a respectful manner, always trying to direct cases if needed to local Muslim family centres and other local authorities. At the same time, in our HWW family, we do mainly community work here in Qatar since 2009, bringing all major communities together as we have members from across communities. This year, we want to highlight this aspect and emphasise that one of our goals towards which we are working hard is to show that women from all nationalities and backgrounds can stand together and help each other to be successful together, building each other along the way. We are blessed to live in a safe country that has welcomed us all and help us flourish. So we should all work together in harmony to contribute to its great development as well.
